Customer Service Department

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to make a complaint about your product. Two weeks ago, I placed an order via the internet for a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which is priced at 10 pounds. This morning I received a package from your company and as I eagerly unpacked it, to my surprise I found the back cover of the book missing. Although it won’t affect my reading of the story, I do wish to have a perfect copy.

I request that you send me another copy as soon as possible. I will return the copy in my hands back to you, if you could kindly reimburse the postage cost.

This incident shows there is room for improvement concerning your quality control. I do hope you can look into the matter and find out what caused the damage.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Sir and Madam,

My name is Li Hua. I am writing this letter as I would like to volunteer to help at the ninth BRICS Summit.

I’m an 18-year-old man from Xiamen and I’m studying at a foreign language school. I would love to help out when the BRIC Summit takes place in my hometown. To begin with, I have a good knowledge of both English and French. My main interests also happen to be politics, the economy and current affairs. Furthermore, I’m skilled at communicating with others – I’m the captain of my class’s debate team – and I always enjoy helping others. Last but not least, there is no doubt that I’m familiar with our city, which will surely be of great importance to the job.

If given the chance, I’ll spare no effort to provide the best service to those who need it. I would appreciate it if you could respond to my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Mr Smith,

I hope you’re well. I’m back home in China now and would like to express my most sincere thanks for your kindness during my visit to California and for allowing me to stay in your home.

Unfortunately, it seems that I left behind the English dictionary that was given to me as a gift by my American teacher. I imagine that it would have been left on the bookshelf in the bedroom I stayed in. Could I trouble you by asking you to send it back to me please? The postage of course will be at my expense. It was such a thoughtful gift that I couldn’t bear to lose it.

Thank you again and I hope to see you soon.

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Mr Smith,

______________________________ Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Smith,

Thank you for choosing to build a children’s Amusement Park in our city. I’m sure all the young people here will love it.

If you don’t mind, I’d like to offer a few suggestions for the park.

I think it should have different themes, such as a history theme or a future theme. In the history-themed area, children could improve their knowledge of the past by learning about important events from many years ago. In the future-themed part, children could open their minds and develop their imagination by seeing others’ ideas about life in the future. Of course, I hope the park will also have some traditional rides, such as a roller coaster and a pirate ship.

But most of all, I’m looking forward to having fun in the new park.

Yours,

Li Hua

1. 词数100左右;

Dear Peter,

______________________________

With sincerest thanks

Li Hua

Dear Peter,

Words are really not enough to express my gratitude to you for your timely gift for my birthday – a copy of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary.

There are many reasons why I refer to it as a timely gift. Firstly, I’m preparing a speech for the 21st Century Cup National High School English Speaking Competition in six weeks. Furthermore, although I already had an English-Chinese dictionary, it only has Chinese explanations. This new dictionary features explanations in both Chinese and English. In addition, it’s known that the Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary places emphasis on more modern English words than others do.

When your birthday comes, I hope I can return the favor by giving you such a valuable and thoughtful present too.

With sincerest thanks

Li Hua

1. 全球变暖造成的负面影响;

When it comes to the subject of global warming, people often just sigh with worry. How long will it last? Is there anything regular people can do to help stop it?

The side effects of global warming are frightening. Massive ice sheets in the Arctic are melting at alarming rates and causing the oceans to rise. If the sea level keeps rising, a series of disasters may occur, perhaps even threatening the existence of life on Earth.

To stop global warming, everyone should do their part by adjusting their everyday activities. We can change our daily practices for the better by doing simple things such as reusing paper or using cloth bags instead of disposable plastic ones when shopping. Just bear in mind that even the smallest thing counts, as long as it is done by enough people.

Dear John,

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear John,

I’m very glad to hear that you like Chinese Tang poems. I would like to tell you something more about Tang poetry.

Poems of the Tang dynasty are the most significant in China’s long history of poetry. Tang poems have a regular form, with most poems consisting of four lines with five or seven characters in each line. However, the most obvious feature of Tang poems is the way they paint a picture in the reader’s mind, creating a special feeling with a minimum of words. Tang poetry is both emotional and imaginative, which makes it appeal to people from all over the world.

I hope someday you have the chance to visit China and learn more about Tang poetry. I’m sure then you will come to enjoy it even more.

Yours,

Li Hua

I’d been looking forward to Christmas for such a long time! There was no doubt that Christmas meant a lot to a child like me. The smells of roasted turkey, baked ham and homemade bread hung in the air. Every room was decorated in a fancy way and had a festive air. There were unexpected presents, and most importantly, there was a flaming Christmas pudding (圣诞火焰布丁), a kind of traditional Christmas dessert in my grandma’s homeland, England.

It was one week before Christmas. Yet it seemed that everything was going wrong for me. Mom told me we were going to my grandmother’s house for the holiday. What bad news! Grandma came to the States from England soon after she married Grandpa 40 years ago and lived with Uncle Henry on a farm some 15 miles out of town after Grandpa’s death. They had no electricity or running water and lacked what I considered the “good things” in life. They had also made no plans for Christmas. How could I spend my CHRISTMAS there?! Yet when Christmas Eve arrived, Mom told me in her best “I-mean-it” voice to remove all the decorations from our Christmas tree. She packed those up, along with all the trimmings (配菜) for a complete turkey dinner.

Christmas morning dawned perfectly, and the sun shone brightly across a fresh blanket of snow. I sulked (愠怒) silently in the backseat of the car as we made our way to Grandma’s. This was going to be the worst Christmas ever!

Obviously, our visit was a surprise to Grandma. “What on earth are you doing here? We didn’t expect anyone. It’s Christmas, and I don’t even have a turkey to cook for you.” “I knew that,” Mom said as we set boxes of goodies on the kitchen table. “That’s why we brought one with us.” “We must have a tree,” Mom insisted. “Otherwise, what will we do with all these decorations?”

Paragraph 1:

Uncle Henry knew what Mom meant, and we went into the woods on the farm immediately.

Paragraph 2

Just then, Mom stood up and went into the kitchen. “Goodness!” Grandma shouted.

____________________________________________________

Uncle Henry knew what Mom meant, and we went into the woods on the farm immediately. Luckily, we found a perfect Christmas tree. Back home, Uncle Henry and I began to hang the decorations on the tree. Meanwhile, Mom was busy in the kitchen, preparing the Christmas dinner for us. Soon the house took on a festive air. We gathered under the candlelight, talking, laughing and enjoying the delicious turkey. I was actually beginning to enjoy this unusual Christmas Day.

Just then, Mom stood up and went into the kitchen. “Goodness!” Grandma shouted. Looking up, I saw Mom standing at the table, smiling, with a plate in her hand. A flaming Christmas pudding! “Merry Christmas, Mother,” Mom said. “I haven’t seen a flaming pudding since I left England 40 years ago”, Grandma replied. “Thank you for your great surprise, my dear.” Tears of joy filled her eyes. I couldn’t hold back my tears, either. I knew then that Mom had also given me the best Christmas present ever – the spirit to give and to share.

To most teenagers (and even some parents), there’s nothing more out-of-date than dinner with the family. Instead of sitting down with boring parents and annoying younger siblings, they’d prefer to load their plates, walk away and stay in their own rooms to eat. But evidence suggests that’s exactly what they need to do.

Researchers began reporting the benefits of family dinner about a decade ago, focusing mainly on how it affects children. Studies show that families who eat dinner at least three or four times a week together benefit in many ways.

Eating together helps families achieve open communication and build stronger and healthier relationships. Children have better grades at school and are better adjusted as teens and adults, and the entire family enjoys healthier nutrition. For many families, eating dinner together proves to be a good and effective way to reduce the risk of addiction for young people, and helps to raise healthier children. It is also a great time to share the events of the day, discuss news and ideas and just be together to enjoy each other’s company.

During dinner time parents have a better opportunity to show that they care for their children. Sitting at the same table and sharing meals is how parents can find out more about their children’s school performance, daily activities and attitudes toward life. When parents have all this information they can better direct their kids toward positive things in life. They also have a better chance to reduce the possibility that children will get involved with alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs.

However, family researchers say that the benefits of family dinner are by no means automatic. Parents can sit down to dinner with their kids every day and achieve nothing. No family dinner can benefit if there is too much arguing going on, if there is no meaningful conversation or, even worse, if there is just plain silence during a gathering.

Though teenagers often prefer to eat alone, dining with the family can be beneficial in many different ways, especially to children. Firstly, open communication during dinner time can build stronger relationships, which can help children develop physically and mentally in a healthier way. Secondly, it provides a good chance for parents to show children their love and care, teaching them to form positive attitudes toward life. However, no benefit can be achieved if communication goes badly.

If you praise the young, they might give you a pleasant surprise.

Praise has a vital effect on humans, especially on the young. And I am one of those who have greatly benefited.

Once during my high school years, my English teacher asked me to deliver a speech in class. Even though I spent a lot of time preparing for it, I was so nervous that my mind went blank. I was on the point of giving up when my classmates gave me encouraging applause and my teacher gave me an understanding smile and an inspiring gesture. I picked up my courage and finished my speech as planned. Without their praise and encouragement, I wouldn’t have made so much progress in English later.

Proper praise plays a powerful part in pushing people to be better. It provides people with the courage to stick to their goals.

I was on the point of…when…

请以“What it takes to succeed”为题,结合自身实际事例,写一篇英语短文。

What it takes to succeed

Though success is related to many unpredictable factors, the most important are one’s interest and perseverance, and I proved this in my academic contests.

I decided to enter programming contests two years ago when my teacher first introduced programming to me. I was fascinated by its unique thinking pattern and soon fell in love with it. Although it took up almost all of my spare time, I enjoyed writing codes to solve challenging problems and competing with my peers. Sometimes, I even had to stay up until midnight to participate in an online contest for practice, which nearly took away all of my energy. Anyway, I survived all these overwhelming challenges and finally won first prize last year.

All in all, success is within reach as long as you are motivated by your interests and perseverance.

4月23日,世界读书日来临之际,学校正举办“The book I Like best”的征文活动。

The book I like best

Of all the books I’ve read, the Harry Potter series by the famous British writer, J.K. Rowling, are the most impressive ones.

Firstly, the weird world of magic in which the story is set quickly got my interest. This world, full of mystery and uncertainty, leads readers into a magic journey of exploration.

In addition, the plot, made up of a series of adventures experienced by Harry Potter and his best friends Ron and Hermione, is incredibly dramatic. It never fails to hold its readers’ attention once they open the book. With courage, wisdom and above all, unity, the three, though too young at first to master powerful magic, survive rough battles with Voldemort, the darkest wizard.

They truly are “hard-to-put-down” books!

本习作以核心观点“Of all the books I’ve read, the Harry Potter series by the famous British writer, J.K. Rowling, are the most impressive ones”开篇点题,简洁明了。

Negative effects of television

With television becoming part of every area of daily life, people have begun to argue whether the impact of television is positive or negative. My opinion is that, in the long run, viewers will suffer from it.

Firstly, television makes viewers passive. For example, they can stay up late to watch basketball games on TV, but they do not have the least desire to play on the court themselves, which will in time affect their health.

Secondly, television discourages communication. Families watching TV do very little talking except for very brief exchange of ideas. This is bound to influence family relationships.

Worst of all, television sometimes gives a false picture of reality. In many cases, viewers will be cheated by the wealth of the characters on television and begin to doubt their own modest lives.

All in all, I believe that television, like cigarettes, is harmful to our physical and mental health.

此考题要求以“Positive (or Negative) effects of television”为题,阐述对television的看法。是positive or negative,而不是positive and negative,所以,只须选择利或弊展开论述即可。

Dear Jim,

It’s great to hear from you! How’s everything going on your side? I was pleasantly surprised to find out that you are interested in hearing about the activities that are happening at my school, and I’m happy to let you know about what we’re doing.

The so-called “Students Who Moved the School” activity requires each class to elect a student that is highly involved in class or school affairs. This might have been a tough choice for some classes, but to my classmates and I, it was very apparent that Tiger was the best choice.

Tiger is an extraordinarily gifted boy, and he has applied his talents to a number of class activities. For example, he made great use of his rich cinematic experience when we were shooting our short movie and directing our English drama. Moreover, he knows how to do a lot with computers and technology, and he is skilled in activities like adjusting the projector. If you were to meet him, you would definitely be as impressed by him as we are.

Tiger is a positive influence on me. His achievements have encouraged me to find my own strengths, and he has inspired me to devote more time to something that benefits others.

Do you know anyone similar at your school? Let me know. Write to me soon, because I can’t wait to hear from you again!

Yours,

Li Hua

Dear Chris,

Long time no see! I was really glad to receive your letter. As you have said you are interested in the National Aquatics Center, also known as the Water Cube, I’m glad to offer you some information about it.

Covering an area of over 55,000 square meters, the Water Cube stands proudly in the Olympic Green in Chaoyang district. This amazing building has been honored as “the largest membrane structure in the world”. It’s also one of the greatest stadiums in Beijing, and it is used for holding swimming and diving events with athletes from all over the world.

The construction of the venue started on Dec 24, 2003. The architect who designed the stadium used a new type of structure – a membrane structure – in a creative way in order to make the stadium look translucent outside. The stadium is so huge that it can hold 17,000 people at the same time.

It got the beautiful name “the Water Cube” from its blue-toned look. Interestingly, it will be transformed into “the Ice Cube” to welcome the coming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. And I really hope you will be able to come to Beijing and watch the Games then.

As someone once put it, “Architecture is frozen music.” The Water Cube is an incredibly elegant building and I appreciate it a lot. I hope the Winter Olympic Games will be a tremendous success in this great building.

Yours,

Li Hua
