第一节(共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分)

A

Willa Cather once said,“When people ask me whether writing has been a hard or easy road,I always answer with the famous saying: The end is nothing;the road is all. That is what I mean when I say writing has been a pleasure. I have never used the computer with the thought that one more task had to be done.”

Like most writers,Willa Cather did not write books for the money that they brought her,but rather for the pleasure that came in their writing. Her works were, like her, simple and full of the vigor of her days in Nebraska, where she grew from child to young womanhood and where she developed a deep love for the treeless land of the great plain with its wild flowers, wheat fields and rivers.

“It’s a rather strange thing about the flat country,” she wrote later. “It takes hold of you or it leaves you perfectly cold. A great many people find it very dull;they like a church tower,an old factory,a waterfall, the country all made to look like a German Christmas card ...But when I come to the open plain, something happens. I’m home. I breathe differently.”

21. Willa Cather wrote because she found writing________.

A. simple and lively                                     B. opened up a road to success

C. neither too hard nor too easy                            D. interesting and enjoyable

22. What was the place like where Cather grew up?

A. It was cold, plain and without a church.              B. It was vast, open and flat.

C. It was like a German Christmas card.          D. It was a colorful world of wild flowers.

23. When she said “It takes hold of you or it leaves you perfectly cold.” Willa Cather meant that________.

A. you either love the place or hate it                    B. you decide either to stay or to leave

C. some find the place warm; others find it cold

D. some find the place peaceful; others find it wild

B

Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others, as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (扭曲的) one.

Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in a country and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be from the secondhand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different at all!

Differences between peoples do, of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity (快速) and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be,at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed (展示) to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not:some different kind of animal from themselves.

24. Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they are________.

A. distorted    B. normal                  C. similar to each other    D. different from its own

25. One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will________.

A. find out why its people are different B. argue in favor of this country and the language

C. know the country and its people better    D. like its inhabitants and their language

26. In this passage, the author wants to say________.

A. differences between peoples will gradually disappear because of the ease of travel

B. differences between peoples do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alike

C. differences between peoples will continue to exist and the world will be a dull place

D. differences between peoples will not exist as one hopes

C

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth, one becomes happy, the other becomes miserable. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.

In whatever situation people can be placed, they may find conveniences and inconveniences. In whatever company, they may find persons and conversations more or less pleasing. At whatever table, they may find meat and drink of better and worse taste. In whatever climate, they may find good and bad weather. In almost every face and every person, they may discover good and bad qualities.

Under these circumstances, happy people fix their attention on the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the contrary things. They offend many people and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. This turn of mind may grow into a habit, but the habit may be cured when those who have it are convinced of its bad effects.

I hope this little advice may be of service to them, and help them change this habit, which has serious consequences in life, since it brings on real sorrow. If those who keep the habit aim at obtaining some advantage in rank or fortune, nobody wishes them success. These people should change this bad habit and learn to be pleased with what is pleasing, without making themselves and others unhappy.

27. What do happy people tend to do according to the writer?

A. look at the bright side of things.                  B. always try to be cheerful

C. like the pleasant part of conversation              D. enjoy good food and fine weather

28. The writer describes the situation in the second paragraph by________.

A. giving examples      B. making comparisons     C. drawing a conclusion  D. giving a definition

29. The pronoun “them” in the last paragraph refers to ________.

A. happy people          B. positive people  C. disagreeable people  D. sad people

30. What does the writer advise people to do to become happy?

A. To appreciate others.                          B. To give up negative thoughts.

C. To obtain some advantage in fortune.     D. To learn to be pleased with what is pleasing.

第二节  七选五(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

注意:选项EAB填涂, FAC填涂,GAD填涂

31   . Stone hammers—some of the oldest human tools date back as early as 2,600,000 BCE. Not only is the hammer the oldest tool, but it is also the greatest. What makes the hammer so great is its simplicity, power, and usefulness.

32   . The hammer is made up of two main parts: a handle and a head. The handle is used to swing the hammer. The head is used to hit other objects.

33   . This power results from two factors: the weight of the head and the speed at which the hammer is swung. When a hammer is swung, the handle carries the weight at a distance. The weight of the head together with the speed is what gives the hammer so much power.

In addition to the hammer's great power, it also has a wide range of useful applications.   34   . For example, it can be made to pound nails. It can break apart hard objects such as brick or concrete. It can bend and shape metal or steel. It can gently tap objects to make small adjustments. It can be used in jewelry making industry.   35   .

The hammer truly is a great tool-simple, powerful and useful. It has come to represent hard work and show the spirit of human industry.

A. The structure of the hammer is quite simple.

B. It can help to accomplish many tasks in daily life.

C. You can never imagine how people try to improve it

D. In times of danger, it can even be used as a weapon.

E. The hammer may be the oldest tool we have record of.

F. A modern machine surely has more advantages than a hammer.

G. Simple as it is, the hammer is still able to produce great power.

To stay away from the disease, you’d better stay at home as much as possible and don’t expose yourself to the polluted air. Besides, you should wash your hands more often so as to keep them clean. Also, keeping the windows open to have more fresh air in the room is helpful. And above all, it does a lot of good to you if you eat more fruit and vegetable, for doing this can help keep you fit and strong.

The disease is not so deadly as it seems to be,so do be at ease! Take care and you’ll be OK.

W: I did, but I have not had a chance to look it over yet.

M: Not yet? It’d been over a week and I was hoping to get an answer today.

Text 4

W: The movie next Tuesday has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

M: What do you mean?

W: Well, by last night only a few tickets have been sold.

Text 5

W: If I were you, I’d take the bus to work. Driving at rush hour is terrible.

M: But by the time the bus gets to my stop, there aren’t any seats left.

Text 6

W: What’s wrong, Peter?

M: Can you believe this? 6 I locked my keys in the car and 7I have to go to the airport to pick up my aunt.

W: So, what are you going to do?

M: I don’t know. Could I borrow your car for a few hours?

W: I’m sorry, but I really need it this afternoon.

M: Well, 8 could you drive me home then? I have spare keys there.

W: That’s no problem.

M: Do you have a quarter for the phone? My wallet is in the car, too/

W: Here you are. Anything else?

M: No, that’s it. I really appreciate it.

W: Good morning, Mr. White.10 I wonder if you could spare a few minutes. I’d like to ask you a few questions.

M: Well, I can spare you a few minutes, but 9 I’d very busy preparing for our exhibition, you know.

W: Just a few questions. Where is it going to be held?

M:11 It’s going to be held in the art gallery.

W: Who is opening it?

M: It’s going to be opened by Mr. Smith.

W: It’s quite a big exhibition, isn’t it?

M: Quite big. Some very famous paintings will be shown.

W: I believe they’re sent from different countries, aren’t they?

M: Yes, that’s right. Quite an international event for our town.

W: Well, thank you. Mr. White. Wish you every success with the exhibition.

M: Thank you.

M: 12You often come to school late. Yesterday, for example, you…

W: Yes. I’m very sorry about that. 13You see, my alarm clock didn’t work and…

M: Your alarm clock? But you told me yesterday that the bus had broken down.

W: Oh, did I? I just forgot to say that my clock didn’t work, either.

M: It’s a good story. Now, tell me again why you want tomorrow off.

W: Well… er, you see, my grandmother is ill. She is in hospital and… and she is going to have an operation. I want to visit her.

M: Oh, I see. So your grandfather is ill as well.

W: As well? I… I don’t understand.

M: Neither do I. When we began this conversation, you said your grandmother was ill. And you didn’t say she was going to have an operation! 14 You said she had already had one! And by the way, you also said she was in an old people’s home, not in a hospital.

M: Is this table in the corner okay?

W: Sure. We can sit here.

M: Gee, you’ve hardly get anything on your plate.

W: Yeah, I guess I’m just not that hungry.

M: What’s the matter? Aren’t you feeling well?

W: Well, I’ve been really worried. It’s my car. It’s in the shop again.

M: Really? What’s wrong this time?

W: I don’t know exactly. 15 Something is wrong with the brakes. I think.

M: Well, at least that shouldn’t coast you much to fix. Parts are cheaper for all the American cars like yours. Did the mechanic say how much it would cost?

W: He said he would call me later today about the cost.

M: Watch out he doesn’t try to take advantage of you.

  W: What do you mean?

M: Well, some car mechanics, if they think that someone doesn’t know much about cars, might try to overcharge that person.

W: Maybe so.16 But I trust this man. He has done some work for me in the past and his prices seemed to be fair.

M: Oh, that’s good. Maybe I’ll try using him in the future. By the way, 17 do you need a ride/lift home after class today?

Text 10

19 I attended a strange birthday party last year. My teacher was then 58 years old. But her fellow teacher said that we were celebrating her 39th birthday! We were all surprised and puzzled.

After the party I was told by the fellow teacher that American women have a special saying about birthdays. If a woman is over 40, or even if she is 80, her birthday is always the 39th.20 If she is in her thirties, her birthday will be the 29th.

And in her twenties, it is the 19th. They usually have their "real" birthday when they are below 20.

This shows that American women, especially older women, are very sensitive about their ages. My teacher always says, "We want to be younger."18 So about the age of western woman, my advice is that if you don't know it, don't ask about it; if you really know it don't mention it
